兩大報頭條對決：《港大學者排外/恐(北上)利益受影響》vs《盧寵茂﹕馬斐森無知無能無心 多名教授轟新校長不濟/(新校長)空泛答願景 學術地位遜前任》。
the public are not capable of rating academic standards in the west. not even the media. who knows how good is bristol’s medical school compared to say, johns hopkins’?
In the eyes of many intellectual elites and professionals, the safeguarding of hk against the erosion of the ‘evil empire’ comes first.(131007一後補：AD港大出身的名家專欄「今次選校長是香港集體命運之縮影」)
This is a replay of the unsuccessful call of「保衛香港」before the turnover. Only now more mature and capable. For some, the threat is deadly. If we lose, all of us who hold a SAR passport could become「屁民」（asshole?).
And indeed, skimming thru the headlines of the leading ‘resistance’ paper, one has to admit that the mainland itself has much to blame:
these are the people who snap up baby foods and nursery slots from our babies, iPhones from us, flood our northern territory, replacing our age-old stores with jewellery shops that no hk belongers want......
（131006後補：《內地客紮營轉攻南丫島沙灘 居民：霸廁所刷牙洗澡》。此報並非resistance paper）
in the eyes of some beholders, the north is a place where the ruthless govern the uncivilised. How can we let them destroy the most civilised and freest society of S.E. Asia?
So after the scandal of ‘kowtowing' to the premier to-be under the reign of a scholar of chinese-descent, i don’t blame 'u' for bringing in a westerner to guard against further such incident.
'ur' alumni include almost all the leaders of the pan-democrats. They surely prefer such a choice to a scholar of chinese-descent who still harbors a pan-chinese or大中華view, be him/her of nobel calibre.
But if we expect a non-chinese scholar will minimise the cooperation with the mainland, that may be too optimistic. Most of the cross-border ventures nowadays are market-oriented and bring revenue and influence to hku more than the mainland.
To put it bluntly, because of the 1:200 population imbalance across the border, hku crazes the mainland market more than the reverse. I don’t see how a non-chinese scholar can resist the incentive generated from this huge imbalance. He has to put "u", not politics first, right?
